CURRICULAR CHOIRS
FRESHMAN CHOIR
Eligible Grade Level: 9, Treble Voices Only
Freshman Choir is open to all incoming freshman singers regardless of previous singing experience. This class will focus on the development of basic singing skills, including tone development, part singing, proper body positioning for singing, breath support and control, the establishment of a healthy choral tone, and music reading. This group performs at least four times during the school year. Attendance at all events is expected.
CONCERT CHOIR
Eligible Grade Level: 9 (Tenor/Bass Voices Only) 10, 11, 12 (All Voice Types) COURSE IS REPEATABLE
Concert Choir is open to all singers in grades 10-12 and 9th grade tenor/bass voices, regardless of previous singing experience. Instructional emphasis is placed on healthy vocal production, sight reading, tonal memory, singing alone and with others, and balance and blend within a choral ensemble. This group performs at least four times during the school year. Attendance at all events is expected.
TREBLE CHOIR

Treble Choir is the most advanced treble choral ensemble. Placement in Treble Choir is predicated on a placement audition with the choral team. Instructional emphasis is placed on healthy vocal production, sight reading, tonal memory, singing alone and with others, and balance and blend within a choral ensemble. Treble Choir performs repertoire selected from a wide variety of musical styles and historical periods. This group performs at least four times during the school year, in addition to select festivals and community performances outside of the school day. Attendance at all events is expected.
A CAPPELLA CHOIR

A Cappella Choir is the most advanced mixed choral ensemble. Placement in this ensemble is predicated on an audition with the choral team. Instructional emphasis is placed on vocal production, sight reading, tonal memory, singing alone and with others, and balance and blend within a choral ensemble. A Cappella Choir performs repertoire selected from a wide variety of musical styles and historical periods. This group performs at least four times during the school year, in addition to select festivals and community performances outside of the school day. Attendance at all events is expected.
A CAPPELLA CHOIR HONORS
Eligible Grade Level: 11 (Tenor/Bass Voices) & 12 (All Voice Types)
Prerequisites: Placement in A Cappella Choir by audition, and permission of instructor. COURSE IS REPEATABLE
This course follows the same curriculum as A Cappella Choir with increased challenge, performance juries, and recital participation. The course is offered for weighted credit, and students must be pre-approved by the course instructor and Fine Arts Department Chairperson. See course instructor for pre-approval form.
CO-CURRICULAR CHORAL ENSEMBLES Credit: None.
In addition to the large choral ensembles, the choral program offers several select ensembles for students who seek added performance opportunities beyond their curricular choral coursework. These groups are smaller than the large ensembles (10-30 members) and sing music that is tailored to these smaller groups. Enrollment is determined by audition. In addition to performing on the various choral concerts, ensembles are invited to sing at school, district, and community activities. Additional information about these ensembles may be obtained through the Fine Arts Department website or the music faculty.
All Access
All Access is a non-auditioned student-led ensemble that meets twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) during 8th period. Students should enroll for "All Access Study Hall." The group is composed of general education students working side-by-side with students with special needs. For all students, emphasis is placed on musical growth, leadership, and building relationships. Membership requires students to have an 8th hour study hall (or, for seniors, an early release). Please see Mrs. O’Riordan if you have questions.
Auditioned Select Ensembles
Note: Students who wish to audition for any co-curricular select ensemble must first be enrolled in the corresponding curricular ensemble, and must be initially enroll in the appropriate resource period in order to avoid difficult schedule changes later. After auditions have been completed, students not selected for ensemble participation will be reassigned to a regular lunch/resource.
Freshman Ensemble
The Freshman Ensemble is made up of freshman treble voices from Freshman Choir. Auditions are held in the fall, and rehearsals will begin second semester during the first half of 4th period. This is a nice opportunity for freshman students to experience advanced music literature in a smaller group setting. The group performs at the North High School Winter Choral Concert and Spring Choral Showcase.
Concert Singers
The Concert Singers are made up of members from the Concert Choir. The group is designed to challenge Concert Choir members to deepen their musical skills and experience public performance in a smaller group setting. The study of madrigals, chamber music, and vocal jazz is stressed. The group meets daily before school at 7:25 am. Some extra performances are scheduled for this group, especially during the holiday season.
Treble Ensemble
The Treble Ensemble is the most prestigious treble-voice vocal ensemble at North High School, and is comprised of Treble Choir members. The group participates in extra performances in the community as well as school concerts. The group meets every day, during the second half of 4th period.
Chamber Choir
This group is the most advanced mixed-voice vocal ensemble at North High. It is a mixed ensemble made up of students who are enrolled in the A Cappella Choir, and meets daily during 5th period. The group performs over twenty five times during the school year for various school and community groups. This ensemble requires a high level of musical ability and commitment. NOTE: Very few, if any, of Chamber Choir’s community performances have been scheduled. These are scheduled throughout the year, and it is expected that members of the group will be flexible with their time, especially during the month of December.
